The Inner Space/The Outer Place

Concordia Community Art Education

This exhibition highlights the personal practices and community collaborations of current and past students in the Art Education BFA and MA programs, celebrating the diversity and richness of the community partnerships developed by the department's students and alumni. The exhibition is being held in tandem with the Canadian Society for Education through Art Annual Conference (hosted by Concordia and McGill University) November 6-8, 2008, providing an opportunity to celebrate the department and to showcase its achievements to visiting scholars and art educators from across Canada.

L’œuvre et la main-d’œuvre
L’œuvre et la main-d’œuvre was co-created by a group of adults in CEDA (Centre d’éducation des adultes de la Petite Bourgogne et de Saint-Henri) a literacy program, in collaboration with Adriana de Oliveira, Catherine Sylvain and the Danielle Arcand. The development and production of this work, commemorating CEDA’s 35th anniversary, was guided by the participants’ desire to highlight the important role that the CEDA community has played in their lives. This work emerged in the context of a three-year partnership (2005-2008) between the artist-run centre SKOL and the CEDA.

Old Brewery Mission Privacy Panels
The men and women of St James drop-in Centre created the privacy panels for the beds of the Old Brewery Mission, a homeless shelter in Montreal. These panels are part of the ongoing Concordia Community Art Education program in which students enable the homeless men and women to give back to their community and regain a sense of belonging through art.

Sharing their World: Mixed Media Approaches to Storytelling
These two projects explore the ways that photography, narrative writing and oral history can enable young people to bring their ideas, concerns, personal/family histories and real world experiences into the classroom and the community. Young people who take part in this process of cultural production and reflection gain a deeper understanding of their own identity and their place in the community. Sitter
Sitter is about the process of portraiture, modeling the interaction between sitter and painter. The painting depicts the likeness of the subject, focusing on his agitation, physical discomfort and boredom during the studio session. The animation conveys the likeness of the sitter, but using a time-based medium it describes the social space of a portrait session. The interpersonal relationship articulates a shared narrative and calls into question the ‘essence and likeness’ traditionally deployed in the discourse surrounding portrait art.

Cinq minutes en ballon
The hot air balloon, this slow and graceful object, is in sharp contrast with our fast and chaotic world. The hot air balloon is trapped in the showcase of the gallery. The balloon inflated by fans, is compressed and unable to reach its full capacity. The balloon’s presentation is unusual and the blower system inadequate or even incongruous for the purpose, but we can still imagine ourselves flying with it. It is a space, a context that makes the imagination sway between reality and fiction, between the exterior and interior space of the viewer.

Hidden (Home)
This installation focuses on the relationship between my roles as a painter, photographer, and sculptor, centering on the act of re-creating. Seeing the painting, the photographic source and the sculpture together visually expresses paradox. It juxtaposes multiple points of view as a way of exploring the relativity of my experiences. I approach the subject several times each from different angles, perspectives, and media. The comparison demonstrates a before and after, thereby exemplifying the complexity of interpretation.

Il y a …
I have often wondered about this place that is my body through which I see and feel the world. My mind is where all that I know can be called upon when I want to understand yet so much more about myself remains hidden to my consciousness. There sleeps in the mind all of life’s lived experiences and many memories that may never be recalled to consciousness. I suspect that what drives me to make art is related to the desire to remember. My focus remains on the interrelationship between my inner and outer perception, which has broadened my awareness of life as I sense it through my body.

La robe est une transition, La robe est la voix (The dress is a transition, the dress is the voice)
By exploring and using conceptual metaphors as a way to carry out research and create, the paper dresses have enabled me to study orientational and ontological metaphors in particular. For me, the dress is a boundary and a projection that voices my relationship to my surroundings. Numerous layers, consisting of knowledge, real life, the creative approach and research, occurring internally and externally, are combined in the dress to shape a specific experience for each passage.
