POSSIBLE MOVEMENTS
September 7 to October 1, 2010
YORK CORRIDOR VITRINES

Possible Movements is a multi-layered, non-linear cinematic exploration of, and intervention with, the Grey Nuns' Mother House Chapel in Montreal.

Built by eminent architect Victor Bourgeau in 1871, the Chapel was designated as a national heritage site in 1971. Spiritual center of the Grey Nuns' Community, it will soon be transferred together with the entire Mother House to its new owner, Concordia University. The forthcoming conversion of this inner-city heritage site echoes the upheavals of the Quiet Revolution that propelled Quebec into secular modernity.

The Possible Movements installation offers an experimental and evocative blend of architectural visualization and historical excavation, transforming the celebrated chapel into a living virtual space. Contextualized by recent critical discourses about history and memory, multiple screens integrate stereoscopic 3D models with found materials, phantasmic layers of the ephemeral and the enduring.

Marielle Nitoslawska (Conception and supervising); Alison Reiko Loader (Stereoscopy and digital imaging); Suzie Synnott (Compositing); Jane Tingley (Management and curation).
We express our sincere gratitude for their generous support to Sister Cécile Castonguay, Superior of the Mother House, Gabriel Collard, its Administrative Director, and to the entire SGM community.
