Deirde Logue/Allyson Mitchell, FAG Feminist Art Gallery (Toronto), CAN'T/WON'T

FOFA Atrium | L'atrium FOFA

CAN'T/WON'T is a series of four protest banners that display the following text:

WE CAN'T COMPETE

WE WON'T COMPETE

WE CAN'T KEEP UP

WE WON'T KEEP DOWN

Due to the following circumstances [list umpteen statistics about how gender/"race", homophobia (particularly trans and lesbophobia) and class operate in the art world] we propose these slogans and ask the following questions: "Why would you want to be a winner in this hierarchal structure?" and "How do we both resist and reconcile our participation in this oppressive system?"

CAN'T/WON'T is an acknowledgement of the dilemmas of queer/feminist cultural participation.

We can't compete so we won't compete. We can't keep up so we won't keep down.
Instead we will: Instead we will:
host collaborate
fund nurture
support cultivate
claim feed
help enable

The Feminist Art Gallery - FAG - is our geographical footprint located in Toronto, Canada.  FAG does not depend on formal funding sources nor will it ever be tied to one government or corporate controlling purse string.  FAG cannot be bought, sold or appropriated by institutions.  Instead, FAG is focused on diverse community of individuals and artists and our collective and communal powers.  FAG works to support feminist and queer artists and to make their work visible.  FAG has a 'matronage' program whereby people contribute to a pool of resources insuring that artists will always be paid for exhibiting their work.
