Following Giacometti: Painting as Research:  Sebastien Fitch

Over the last decade, new emphasis has been placed in academic circles, and especially within the field of Art Education, on the potential of studio practice as a site for the creation of new knowledge.

In Following Giacometti: Painting as Research, artist and art-educator Sebastien Fitch uses a hybrid methodology to investigate the works of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Framing discussions concerning tacit knowledge and material practice within the context of studio-based research, the resultant painting exhibition tests the theory that new knowledge can be gained through the process of creating artwork.

Concurrently, this exhibition explores the potential of the gallery as a pedagogical site.
Through the melding self-reflective studio production, art history, and art education, the exhibition space becomes a nexus of communication between artist research and the public.
