Theatre for one viewer, one artist
Event description:
The experience will last no longer than a few minutes but is likely to settle somewhere in your soul for a lot longer than most of the splashy jamborees in the neighboring theaters do.
- Charles Isherwood, New York Times
Sitting facing someone else in the world's smallest theater — complete with red-padded walls and soft lighting — is a lot like being in a confession booth, peep show or even an elevator. The performer feeds off the audience, making it seem different from a mere monologue. … It is a rich experience — for the price of nothing.
- Mark Kennedy, Associated Press
Theatre for One comes to Montreal as part of the FOFA Gallery’s annual back-to-school offerings. A portable performing arts space for one performer and one audience member that turns public events into singularly intimate exchanges, Theatre for One has been met with overwhelming critical acclaim and popular success. For four days, Theatre for One will be in residence at Concordia University’s FOFA Gallery presenting music and theatre pieces created specifically for the venue.
Created by Tony Award-winning set designer Christine Jones (BFA 89), with the support of long-time collaborator and Department of Theatre professor Ana Cappelluto, Theatre for One was inspired by the peep show booths of Times Square‘s infamous past during the development of this new type of theatrical space.
The cast includes Nathalie Claude, Steve Cuiffo, Tasha Lawrence, Danette MacKay Dallas Roberts and Harry Standjofski. These artists of different disciplines will perform five- to ten-minute pieces that will be presented in rotation during the four-day residency. Musical guests may be interspersed between performances.
