ABOUT RECTO/VERSO

Participants: Louis-Alexandre Douesnard-Malo, Corina Ilea, Bronwen Moen, Sally Lee

For July and August Concordia's Faculty of Fine Arts (FOFA) Gallery will break from its regular exhibition programming to conduct a one-month summer intensive studio in all areas of the gallery.

Graduate students affiliated with the Concordia University's Faculty of Fine Arts have been invited to submit applications to participate in a working group that will experiment with ways of using the various spaces of the gallery as sites for gathering, place-making, production and exchange.

Recto and verso are printing terms to describe two sides of a sheet of paper within a codex. In the Recto/Verso exhibition, these terms will be used spatially, as in considering the gallery as having multiple sides (and purposes) as well as surfaces in-between.

Recto
On one side of this operation, selected participants will work together to develop and produce a series of actions and activities such as screenings, performances, readings, events, site development projects designed to explore physical particularities of the gallery spaces visible and accessible from Ste. Catherine Street, the street-level vitrine, the main gallery space and the adjoining Sculpture Garden courtyard.

In a collaborative effort to articulate their intentions and populate the sites, participants will connect to each other and to the public through a series of temporal gestures.

Verso
On the flip side, the York Corridor vitrine will serve as a notebook in which all programmed events and activities will be documented.

The work in this area will be used to assess the Recto/Verso exhibition on an ongoing basis and as material for a publication at the conclusion of the project. Project participants will consider this space as an experimental site for documentation and as a complement to the more temporary actions taking space and place simultaneously, as ongoing interest in the archive, journal and documentary protocols as potential works in themselves.

Participants: Louis-Alexandre Douesnard-Malo, Corina Ilea, Bronwen Moen and Sally Lee.
