‘Anima,’ curated by Christine Redfern (BFA 1989), presents Selected Filmworks by Ana
Mendieta, videos, Twelve Mile Creek by Karilee Fuglem (MFA 1992); Night Side of Nature
by Elena Willis (BFA 2003) & Jason Sanchez (BFA 2001); and interactive projection, Xia by Philomène Longpré (BFA 2003; SIP PhD 2012), alongside all of the original drawings by Caro Caron from the comic Who Is Ana Mendieta?

The videos and graphic novella, Who Is Ana Mendieta, depict, in their own way, earth’s forces and their unpredictability. The resulting exhibition, using Mendieta’s own words, is a collection of work “grounded on the primordial accumulations, the unconscious urges that animate the world”.

Who Is Ana Mendieta? is a graphic novella about the art and life of Ana Mendieta, Cuban expatriate, and germinal feminist artist. The publication casts a glance at the machinations of the art world, looking back in particular to the heyday of the feminist revolution. The text is made up almost entirely from quotes, whether they are spoken by Mendieta or by one of the many other cultural figures that inhabit the pages. Internationally known writer, activist and curator Lucy R. Lippard, who was also a friend of Mendieta, contributes the introductory essay.

Who Is Ana Mendieta? is published in English by the Feminist Press (NYC) and in French by Les Éditions du remue-ménage (Montreal). Publication available at the gallery.
